专业概况

The emergence of digital technologies in architectural practice has placed great importance on the architect’s ability to design and disseminate work remotely and within the confines of a computer screen or smaller digital device. This has encouraged architects to embrace more sophisticated techniques of communication within the design and construction process.

In recognition of the need for individuals with this set of professional skills, Lawrence Technological University offers a dual-degree program leading to both a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Media Communication. This dual program prepares students to become fully qualified architects with an extended range of skills in disseminating design information in video, film, and digital formats. Additionally, graduates with this dual degree will have satisfied the educational requirements for licensure in the profession of architecture.

As the content of the BS Media Communication program overlaps considerably with the M. Arch program, the dual degree may be earned with only 31 credits in addition to the total architecture curriculum.

The Architecture Program

The architecture program at LTU seeks to develop graduates committed to an articulate and thoughtful approach to socially relevant design. It supports creative inquiry and critical thinking as the basis for design insight, and clear communication as a design objective. The coursework is designed to provide a foundation for the development of architectural design skills and insights, technical training, social responsibility, environmental awareness, problem-solving abilities, and professional competence.

The program is primarily directed toward the practice of architecture, but it constitutes an excellent, broad-minded education and preparation for work in a range of essential fields in and beyond design, including teaching, research, product development and representation and development, and public service. In the Master of Architecture Direct Entry (M.Arch DE) program, which combines the required undergraduate and graduate coursework, students earn the NAAB-accredited, professional degree required for architectural licensure in the State of Michigan and most other US states and jurisdictions.

The Media Communication Program

In the rapidly evolving world of news and entertainment, the demand for people with creative and technical skills continue to grow. To succeed in this environment, students will need a grounding in the fundamentals of media communication and hands-on experience that will prepare them to apply their skills in real situations.

Traditional media programs tend to focus on a single area – journalism, broadcasting, production, or public relations – but the great demand in the communication field today is for individuals with experience across related disciplines and who can work with confidence and agility in all areas. Media professionals must have the ability to take a project from the planning stage, through data gathering and analysis, to production and broadcast. Lawrence Tech’s Media Communication program has been specifically designed to address these requirements.

At Lawrence Tech, numerous internships are available to students through the program’s affiliations with local radio and television networks, news organizations, the movie industry, and area advertising and public relations firms. This is supported by the Media Communication advisory board whose membership has strong connections to the industry.
