They also look at concepts through the lens of both theory and practice and develop top-notch problem-solving skills. For most, research and development work is a primary part of their responsibilities. While some physicists perform basic research to increase scientific knowledge, others conduct applied research with the goal of creating new devices, products and processes. A great example of this: solid-state physics that led to the development of transistors – which later led to the integrated circuits used in computers.
