COURSE CONTENT

We have over 180 years’ experience of training top quality teachers which proves that we are among the best institutions in the country to train you. The Physical Education (Secondary QTS) programme is taught by experienced and enthusiastic tutors, in partnership with mentors and teachers in local schools. This course leads to the recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) enabling you to teach in schools in England and Wales. The course has been designed to focus on five strands. These strands are:

• Pedagogical Practice
• School experience
• Professional Skills
• Active Schools
• Research

Pedagogical practice

The pedagogical practice strand will introduce you to a range of evidence-based teaching strategies. You will learn to select and apply pedagogies across a range of activity areas, so that you are able to create an environment for pupils to achieve excellent progress and outcomes.

School experience

School experience modules will give you the confidence to teach a whole class across a range of Key Stages and activities. You will learn the importance of having high expectations for all pupils valuing diversity and ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Professional skills

The professional skills strand will enable you to understand the complexity of the role of the teacher and the importance of adopting a professional stance at all times.

Active Schools

The active schools strand will explore the role of physical activity in promoting physical, social and mental health. You will understand the barriers to participation including those that exist within school and physical education lessons.

Research

The research strand will permeate all modules, but also has designated modules that will assist you to produce an independent project in your final year.

WHERE THIS CAN TAKE YOU

This course leads to the recommendation of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) enabling you to teach in schools in England and Wales. You will graduate with the all-round experience and knowledge to teach the National Curriculum for Physical Education (NCPE) and have the skills to meet the Department for Education’s Teachers’ Standards in relation to Key Stage 3 and 4 (11-16 years).
